Windows 10 is known for it’s automatic updates feature. With this feature, Microsoft ensures that your device always stays up to date. The updated Windows 10 devices are more secure, so this is the reason Microsoft is encouraging it’s users to stay updated. But sometimes, Windows 10 users don’t prefer the auto download and installation of software as they want to update the system as per their convenience. There are two methods which can enables you to control Windows 10 auto updates.

We always recommend you to keep your Windows 10 system updated with security patches and updated versions of software. Still we are going to share the tweaks to control Windows 10 auto updates so that you can use this if you are not comfortable with auto updates feature.

If you are using Windows 10 Pro or higher edition, you can directly use Local Group Policy Editor or the Registry Editor to stop Windows 10 auto updates. In case you are using Windows 10 Home, Local Group Policy Editor is not enabled by default, you can follow our tutorial to enable gpedit.msc in Home Edition. After enabling it, you can control Windows 10 auto updates.

Note: This tutorial can’t help you in disabling updation of major updates (feature updates) of Windows 10, but you can control regular updates.

To Control Windows 10 Auto Updates

Option 1: Using Local Group Policy Editor

Press Win key + R to open Run app. Type gpedit.msc and hit OK to launch Local Group Policy Editor.

Navigate the following path

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update

On the right pane of window, double click on “Configure Automatic Updates”.

Turn on the “Enabled” option under Configure Automatic Updates.

Open the drop down menu and select the preferred option from the list. There you can see 4 options to configure automatic updates. The options are as follows:

2 – Notify for download and notify for install
3 – Auto download and notify for install
4 – Auto download and schedule the install
5 – Allow local admin to choose setting

You should select 2 – Notify for download and notify for install, if you really want to control Windows 10 auto updates properly. when you select this option, you get notifications whenever updates will be available. If your preference is different, you can select any of the suitable option.

Now click Apply button to implement changes and OK to close the window.

Option 2: Using Windows Registry Editor

Press Windows key, type regedit and hit Enter key to launch Windows Registry Editor.

Navigate the following path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Right click on Windows key, select New and then Key. This will create a new key.

Type WindowsUpdate to name the new key and hit Enter key.

Now create another key under WindowsUpdate key using same method and name it AU.

Right click on AU key, select New and then click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

The new key will be created on right pane of window. Name the new key as AutoUpdateOptions.

Now double click on AutoUpdateOptions and set the desired value and hit OK. The value options are given below.

2 – Notify for download and notify for install
3 – Auto download and notify for install
4 – Auto download and schedule the install
5 – Allow local admin to choose setting

That’s it. Restart your PC and now Windows 10 auto updates will be in your control.

Standard Warning: It is recommended not to play with Windows Registry Editor unless you are aware of basics of this complex structure. Windows Registry contains all the default settings of the Computer system, so misusing Registry may corrupt your Windows and make your PC unstable. We recommend you to take a backup of your Windows Registry as well as the data of your PC before starting any of registry editing tricks.

How to download & install Windows 10 Updates manually

You have to download & install Windows 10 updates manually, if you select 2 – Notify for download and notify for install option. For this you can follow the below given procedure:

Navigate following path

Settings > Update & security > Windows Update

Click Download button.

Apart from this you can also create Windows Update shortcut on your desktop for quick access.
