Microsoft Postpones February Patch Tuesday Due to Last Minute Issue

Patch Tuesday which is scheduled to the second Tuesday of every month has been postponed for the month of February 2017, due to some issues which are not revealed yet. The Feb. month’s security patch should be a big one, but Microsoft has decided to delay the publishing of this security patch and not disclosed when it will be finally circulated. It seems that there couldn’t be any minor issue in this Patch Tuesday, as the Microsoft technicians’ team was unable to find the solution and decided to delay release date.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has given a short statement to inform about postponing February Patch Tuesday

“Our top priority is to provide the best possible experience for customers in maintaining and protecting their systems. This month, we discovered a last minute issue that could impact some customers and was not resolved in time for our planned updates today. After considering all options, we made the decision to delay this month’s updates. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change to the existing plan.”

The February Patch Tuesday is considered to be a huge one as now onwards, the Microsoft is going to apply the updates model (cumulative updates model) of Windows 10 to other legacy Windows and servers (Win 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2). Besides this, there is an in-the-wild zero day flaw in SMB that exploits key file sharing protocol in most supported versions of Windows and the security patch is awaited for.

Windows users used to obtain two packages a month, one is a “Monthly Rollup” and another is “Security Only”. The former consists of both security fixes as well as general consistency improvements in the form of cumulative update. On the other hand, the later one is not cumulative and doesn’t include general consistency improvements.

From now onwards, Microsoft is going to provide the Security Only package with some of the alterations. The Security Only package will now contain only non-Internet Explorer fixes. There would be a second package which will contain cumulative Security Update for Internet explorer. The Internet Explorer package will contain both historic and new patches as this would be cumulative one.

We would have to wait for the release of Patch Tuesday for February. Hopefully Microsoft team will surely fix the last minute issue without any delay. Stay tuned to know about the next announcement.
