Since the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is delivering free upgrades to its users with genuine windows 7 SP1 and windows 8.1 operating systems in phased manner. Depending upon your needs and likes you may or may not like to upgrade to latest operating system.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 user received an update KB3035583 after which they may have noticed a news Windows 10 icon in their status bar, when clicked this little package will verify your eligibility for free upgrade, if you are eligible, they system will prompt you to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system. Prerequisites to install this update, you must have Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 SP1 installed on your system.

How ever if you are not interested in upgrading to Windows 10 and remove this icon permanently below are some option for you to do so.

Uninstall KB3035583 update.

KB303558 update adds an executable file named GWX.exe, which is configured to start along with your system. To completely remove KB303558 update from your system go to Windows update and click “installed updates” on lower left side of the screen.

On next screen which appears after you have clicked “installed updates” search for KB303558 right click it and select “Unistall” and reboot your system.

Hide KB3035583 from Windows Update list

After you have removed the update, there is a chance that it may resurface again after few days if your windows update setting is configured to download and install automatically. To completely block this patch from reinstalling itself, check update manually then click on the description and
select “Hide Update”

Disable Windows 10 upgrade Notification icon with registry editor hack.

  1. Open registry editor by typing regedit.exe in Start – search in start menu.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
  3. Create a new REG_DWORD registry value called : DisableGwx, Assign it value 1

  1. Somehow KB3035583 got installed on a Dell PC which I’m still setting up. I selected it, as noted, and clicked Uninstall; but the W7 screen has been stuck on “Preparing to configure Windows; do not turn off your computer,” for almost an hour now. (I’m sending this from my other PC.) This can’t just go on forever–what do you recommend?
