Windows Search 4.0 adds support for indexing encrypted files, and enables PC-to-PC search on every operating system where Windows Search 4.0 runs-while an expansive set of organization features give users more flexibility in how they “see” their files. It also features performance enhancements that make indexing and searching online e-mail faster and less network-intensive.
According to Microsoft: ‘Windows Search 4 lets you perform an instant search of your computer. It helps you find and preview documents, e-mail messages, music files, photos, and other items on the computer. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search is a Microsoft Windows service that is also used by programs such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. You can use this search engine to index a program’s content and to obtain instant results when you search in a particular program.’ In other words instead of waiting for the standard search tool in Windows to grind away through your hard drive as it hunts through the files, this program already knows everything that’s on your PC, so it can find it quicker. Note, there is a name change with ths upgrade and the shorter title of ‘Windows Search’ will replace the old ‘Windows Desktop Search’.
